Second Annual Japan Privacy Symposium Focuses on AI and Regional Data Protection
The second annual Japan Privacy Symposium, hosted by the Future of Privacy Forum (FPF) in 2024, brought together privacy experts, policymakers, and government officials to discuss the challenges and solutions surrounding privacy and data protection in the context of AI and digital transformation. The event, which took place at the Ritz-Carlton in Tokyo, Japan, served as a platform for dialogue on regulatory developments and best practices in data protection and artificial intelligence governance, with a particular emphasis on Japan’s AI regulatory landscape and regional cooperation.
One of the key highlights at the symposium was a discussion on Malaysia’s data protection reforms, as shared by Commissioner Nazri Kama from the Personal Data Protection Department of Malaysia. The Commissioner spoke about the transformation of the department into an independent Commissioner’s Office, reflecting growing regional engagement in data protection and AI policy.
The symposium was supported by S&K Brussels LPC and in cooperation with the Personal Information Protection Commission of Japan (PPC) and the Japan DPO Association. Gabriela Zanfir-Fortuna, FPF’s Vice President for Global Privacy, expressed her excitement about the successful second edition of the symposium, which took place on the sidelines of the 62nd Asia-Pacific Privacy Authorities (APPA) Forum.
Commissioner OHSHIMA Shuhei opened the event with a keynote speech. Other notable speakers included Philippe Dufresne, Commissioner of the Office of the Privacy Commissioner, Canada; Ashkan Soltani, Executive Director of the California Privacy Protection Agency; Nazri Kama, Commissioner of the Personal Data Protection Department of Malaysia; Thienchai Na Nakorn, Chairman of the Personal Data Protection Committee, Thailand; and Josh Lee Kok Thong, Managing Director for APAC at FPF.
