Discussing Physique and Variety with Hiten Noonwal
In a unique and enlightening session, L4 Fashion Design students at an unspecified institution had the opportunity to learn from gender fluid artist and LGBTQ+ Influencer, Hiten Noonwal. The interaction was part of a brief titled 'Body and Diversity', aimed at building sensitivity towards body diversity and inclusivity.
Hiten Noonwal, currently the Creative Head at NUN Garage Collection, shared his personal journey of coming to terms with his identity and the adversities he faced. He also discussed the role of cultural norms and expectations in shaping gender and its relationship with appearance.
Through this interaction, the students gained a better understanding of normative body ideals and how culture influences the way individuals feel about their bodies and identities. They were encouraged to question whether masculinity and femininity are social constructs and whether individual behavior can be defined in black and white terms.
The brief introduced the students to the diversity of bodies, body types, shapes, sizes, and gender studies in relation to clothing and fashion. Clothing and fashion were emphasised as essential mediums for people to embrace and express their identity and individuality.
After their interaction with Hiten, the students had the opportunity to express their creativity by depicting their perception of him on paper. This exercise allowed them to apply their newfound knowledge and insights in a practical and personal manner.
Prior to his current position, Hiten Noonwal worked as a Fashion Designer at Ritu Kumar and Assistant Designer at Raw Mango. He completed his master's degree in Apparel/Fashion Design at the National Institute of Design (NID) in 2015. His work experience also includes positions in the fashion industry.
In addition to his work in fashion, Hiten Noonwal is an artist, using his platform to advocate for body positivity, gender fluidity, and LGBTQ+ rights. His influence extends beyond the fashion world, making him an inspiring figure for the L4 Fashion Design students.
This session with Hiten Noonwal was a valuable learning experience for the students, providing them with a broader perspective on body diversity, inclusivity, and the role of fashion in self-expression. It was a step towards fostering a more inclusive and diverse fashion industry.
