Digital Gathering for Online Learners
In the heart of Vienna, Austria, on December 19, 2016, the "I AM ONLINE!" student conference was held, with over 800 students in attendance. Initiated by Regina Hoenigsberger, the event aimed to address the question of whether our education system is prepared for the digital workplace.
Organized in cooperation with the Vienna Chamber of Commerce, the conference focused on "Technologies in the Workplaces of Tomorrow". It included 20 workshops and expert lectures with international experts, shedding light on the skills necessary for success in the digital workplace.
The digital workplace demands a unique blend of strong digital and interpersonal skills. Digital communication skills, proficiency in remote and hybrid work environments, and self-management are essential. Moreover, mastery of artificial intelligence (AI) tools and automation, data literacy, and analytics are highly sought after. Soft skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, emotional intelligence, strategic thinking, and data storytelling are increasingly important as automation handles more routine tasks.
As technology continues to evolve at an unprecedented pace, continuous upskilling and reskilling have become crucial. Training in AI, data literacy, and digital collaboration is becoming more integrated through MOOCs, AI-driven personalized learning, and VR training tools. However, the challenge remains significant to fully align traditional education curricula with the evolving demands of the digital workplace.
Education systems are only beginning to incorporate these changes effectively. There is an increasing need for education systems to emphasise soft skills and adaptability, preparing students for flexible work models and hybrid environments. While progress is evident, the challenge remains significant to fully align traditional education curricula with the evolving demands of the digital workplace, implying the system is still evolving to meet future needs comprehensively.
