The Water Maintenance Association Felda/Ulster/Werra is currently seeking a committed and reliable Engineer (m/f/d) to work on projects related to the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD) and flood protection in the Wartburg district and the district of Schmalkalden-Meiningen.

Job Description

The ideal candidate will have completed studies in civil engineering, water management, water engineering, environmental engineering, or a similar field. The engineer's tasks and areas of activity will include leading, coordinating, planning, and executing measures, preparing planning documents, coordinating external offices, liaising with stakeholders, monitoring construction implementation, and preparing grant applications.

Key Requirements

  • Relevant degree in environmental engineering, aquatic ecology, hydrology, or related disciplines.
  • Experience with WFD implementation, freshwater ecology surveys (e.g., fish, macroinvertebrates, water quality monitoring).
  • Familiarity with hydrogeological monitoring, water quality standards under EU directives, and risk management for industrial and urban water projects.
  • Skills in data collection, analysis, and reporting aligned with WFD assessment and groundwater quality targets.
  • Valid driving license and sometimes eligibility to work in the EU.
  • Ability to work with regulatory frameworks including WFD (2000/60/EC) and related directives.
  • Strong fieldwork skills, sometimes including electrofishing, sampling, GIS, and report writing.

Key Tasks

  • Conducting freshwater and groundwater monitoring to assess ecological and chemical status.
  • Supporting the preparation of Environmental Impact Assessments (EIARs) and licensing related to water bodies.
  • Ensuring data compliance with WFD standards and helping maintain integrated water management plans across catchments.
  • Collaborating with stakeholders and authorities to apply risk-aware industrial and urban planning aligned with EU water legislation.
  • Assisting in remediation and rehabilitation projects where groundwater and surface water quality is at risk.
