Daily Endurance: Bremer Schule Melanchthonstraße Recognized as a Nationwide Role Model
In the heart of Bremen, Germany, the Montag Foundation Youth and Society project "Full-day and Space" is redefining the concept of full-day schooling. This pioneering initiative, demonstrated at the Melanchthonstraße school, is setting a new standard for educational institutions across the nation.
At the core of the project lies an integrated and quality full-day provision, blending educational and social opportunities within a learning environment that promotes quality and efficient time management. The project explores the potential of school buildings, surrounding spaces, and room configurations, aiming to enhance children's learning and development experiences beyond traditional class hours.
Collaboration among stakeholders, including schools, youth services, and local organizations, is another key aspect of the project. This cooperation ensures a holistic, well-rounded offer that integrates education, leisure, and social services, catering to the diverse needs of each child.
A children-centered approach is at the heart of the full-day offerings, ensuring they are designed with the needs and perspectives of children in mind. This approach guarantees that programs align with the developmental and social requirements of the children, fostering their overall growth and well-being.
The initiative also emphasizes sustainable urban integration, positioning full-day schooling within broader urban development strategies. By acting as community hubs, schools become embedded within their neighbourhoods, fostering a sense of belonging and community engagement.
As the nation grapples with the challenge of converting schools into full-day schools, the Montag Foundation project offers a promising solution. Rather than resorting to the construction of additional facilities, the project demonstrates that pedagogy, organization, and space can be thought together through a joint process, requiring minimal renovation measures.
The project's success has been acknowledged by the Senator for Education, Sascha Karolin Aulepp, who was present at the presentation of the project. The House of the Senator for Children and Education has also committed to continuing the project in the coming years.
From 2026, there will be a legal claim to full-day support at primary schools in Bremen. The insights gained from the project are intended to be used by the state of Bremen for further locations, paving the way for a brighter, more inclusive future for children across the city.
