Corporate leaders across Alberta participate in various challenges to raise funds for STARS organization
The 14th annual Rescue in the River event, organized by STARS, took place on Thursday and saw six Albertan industry leaders participate in a series of medical, aviation, and readiness challenges.
The goal of the event was to raise $400,000, with expectations of exceeding that goal. As of Thursday afternoon, the event had raised over $650,000. The information about who specifically provided the donation of over $650,000 is not available in the provided search results, aside from the six Albertan industry leaders who raised money for STARS that day.
The event aimed to test the skills of the participants while rallying support for STARS, a service particularly crucial for the recovery of individuals in remote energy industry plants and sites. Christy Elliott, a participant from Keyera, expressed the importance of STARS to the energy sector.
Each participant was required to raise $50,000 to secure their rescue and earn their flight home. The aviation challenge required participants to determine the amount of fuel needed for a specific distance considering variable weather conditions.
The leaders were airlifted in a STARS H145 helicopter to a secret location for the event. Mike Lamacchia, the chief operating officer of provincial operations for STARS, oversaw the event.
Donations for the event are still being tallied, and it is expected that the final total will exceed the initial goal. Cam Wiebe from News Edmonton contributed to this report.
