Conspiracy Theories Blamed for Woman's Death After Refusing Chemo
A coroner's inquest has concluded that the death of Paloma Shemirani, who declined chemotherapy for her lymphoma, was influenced by her parents' conspiracy theories and lack of medical intervention. The 21-year-old's mother, Ulrike Z., and father were found to have 'adversely influenced' Paloma, contributing to her death.
Paloma's brother, Gabriel, blamed his mother's influence and the state's failure to protect Paloma for her death. He testified about emotional and physical abuse, including food restrictions, during his evidence. The coroner noted the 'striking' family dysfunction and 'reprehensible' behavior of the family during the inquest.
Paloma, who was estranged from her mother until her cancer diagnosis, had been living with a housemate. She declined chemotherapy and followed an alternative treatment plan advised by her parents. Doctors at Maidstone Hospital had given Paloma an 80% chance of survival with chemotherapy. The coroner found that if Paloma had undergone chemotherapy, she probably would have survived.
The coroner's report highlights the dangers of discrediting medical advice and the importance of state intervention in protecting vulnerable individuals. Paloma's parents, prominent conspiracy theorists, had tried to blame medical staff for their daughter's death. Paloma's brothers were not informed about her collapse until after her death, underscoring the family's dysfunctional dynamics.
