In the city of Kiel and the County of Plön, the new school year has begun, bringing thousands of children back onto the streets. For many children, this is their first school commute, characterized by colour, curiosity, and a sense of wonder. However, this new experience also brings new challenges, as children are new to road traffic and may struggle to estimate speeds, distances, and assess dangers.

To ensure safety, adult road users are encouraged to exercise extra caution and consideration. Children, due to their size, can easily be overlooked, and their reactions can be unpredictable, often disregarding road traffic and its dangers. The Kiel Police Directorate will increase its presence near schools in the coming weeks to address these concerns.

The police will consistently intervene in traffic violations and may impose warning fines. Officers will educate drivers about considerate driving and support children and their escorts in crossing the street. Speed checks will be carried out by the police, and the appeal is for drivers to drive only as fast as they would wish for their child to ensure a safe school commute.

Stephanie Lage, Police Directorate Kiel, made the statement, emphasizing the importance of safety during this busy news period. Walking with friends is encouraged as an alternative to being stuck in traffic in the parent taxi. For inquiries, contact the Police Directorate Kiel Press Office at Gartenstraße 7, 24103 Kiel, Tel. +49 (0) 431 160 2010, Email: [email protected]

The police will also continue to provide tips on proper road behaviour. It is crucial for everyone to remember that the safety of our children should be a top priority during this exciting time of the year.
