Collaborative Hydrographic Training Program underway at Comren International School - Nationwide Canadian venture
2021 International School on Hydrographic Surveys (ISHS) Successfully Held at Université Laval
The 2021 International School on Hydrographic Surveys (ISHS) took place from October 25 to 29 at Université Laval, attracting both in-person and online participants from around the world. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the event was a success, with positive feedback from participants, lecturers, and experts.
The ISHS covered a wide variety of topics, including multibeam surveys, vertical referencing, hydrodynamic modeling, digital bathymetric models, uncertainty estimation, patch testing, backscatter data processing, GNSS applications, bathymetry in rivers and shallow waters, Topo-bathy LiDAR, and bathymetry derived from satellite images. Lectures touched on cutting-edge technology and recent advances in hydrography, such as virtual reality and maritime simulation, as well as hydrospatial.
A total of 14 people attended the event in person, and 23 connected online. The geographic origin of face-to-face participants was mainly from Quebec, Ontario, and France, while online participants were more diverse, with representation from Canada, USA, UK, and Australia. Participants had the opportunity to visit the Maritime Simulation and Resource Centre in Quebec City.
New initiatives and activities will be included in the program based on participant feedback. If the health situation improves, field surveys will be included in the program for on-site participants. The event was offered in a co-modal mode, allowing both in-person and online participation.
The International School on Hydrographic Surveys is part of the Canadian Ocean Mapping Research and Education Network (COMREN), a Community of Practice that aims to develop research activities, facilitate technology transfer to industry, and develop and run educational programs. COMREN works closely with government agencies and international organizations to enhance Canada’s capacity and presence in ocean and coastal mapping both domestically and internationally.
For more information about the ISHS, including details of past and future editions, please visit the ISHS website. A new edition of the ISHS is planned for 2022, with a preference for a late summer or early fall date. The aim is to increase the participation of industry and the community of practice in the ISHS school for the next edition.
