Canada Adds CELPIP English Test for Post-Graduation Work Permit

International students in Canada aspiring to secure a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) now have an extra English language proficiency test choice. The Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP) General test is now recognized, joining the existing IELTS and TEF Canada exams. This modification, effective November 1, 2024, necessitates a Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 7 for university graduates and CLB 5 for college graduates, with results less than two years old at the time of application and taken prior to program completion.

To apply for the PGWP, students must complete their studies at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI), maintain full-time student status, and submit their application within 180 days of completing their program. The PGWP enables graduates to acquire valuable Canadian work experience, which can later bolster applications for permanent residency through programs like Express Entry.

CELPIP scores are valid for two years from the date the score report is issued. This validity period applies to PGWP applications and other immigration programs such as permanent residency, express entry, or Canadian citizenship.

The acceptance of CELPIP General test results for PGWP applications broadens the options for international students to demonstrate their English language proficiency. This change, along with the existing requirements for DLIs and full-time student status, aims to provide a clear pathway for graduates to gain Canadian work experience and potentially transition to permanent residency.
