Bremen's Women's Rep Calls for Better Care Work Distribution on Equal Care Day

Bremen's State Women's Representative, Bettina Wilhelm, has called for better distribution of care work and improved work-life balance, highlighting the disproportionate burden on women. This comes as Equal Care Day on February 29th aims to raise awareness of the inequality between women and men in care work.

Nationally, women dedicate an average of nine more hours per week to unpaid care work compared to men. This disparity contributes to women working part-time more often and facing poverty in old age due to care work inequality. To tackle this issue, other countries have implemented policies such as paid family leave, universal childcare, and financial support for caregivers, which help alleviate the burden on women and maintain their economic independence.

In Bremen, the situation is particularly concerning. The city has the second-lowest rate of men taking parental leave at 33.9 percent. Despite the pandemic, there has been no significant increase in men's involvement in family work. Wilhelm emphasises the need to expand care infrastructure to promote gender equality.

Bremen's State Women's Representative has urged for better distribution of care work and improved work-life balance, with Equal Care Day serving as a reminder of the persistent inequality between women and men in care work. Addressing this issue is crucial to ensure women's economic independence and well-being.
