Biotech Pioneers: Bill Rutter's Impact and David Baltimore's Legacy
Biotech pioneer Bill Rutter, co-founder of Chiron, led a team at UCSF in the late 1970s to clone the cDNA for rat pre-proinsulin. Meanwhile, David Baltimore, another biotech trailblazer and discoverer of reverse transcriptase, has recently passed away. Baltimore was involved in several biotech companies, including Immune Design, which he did not found and was not linked to HIV gene therapy in the 1970s.
Rutter's work at UCSF laid the groundwork for Chiron, which he established with Ed Penhoet and Pablo Valenzuela in 1981. The company made significant contributions to biotechnology, including cloning the hepatitis C virus and helping to sequence the HIV genome. Chiron also acquired Cetus, which held the PCR patents based on the work of Kary Mullis. Additionally, Rutter's team successfully cloned the hepatitis B surface antigen and its expression in yeast.
Baltimore, a Nobel laureate, was involved in various biotech companies throughout his career. He co-founded Collaborative Research, CalImmune, and s2a Molecular, among others. Despite his involvement with Immune Design, the company was actually founded in 2008 by Steve Triplett and Andrea Johnston in Seattle, focused on immunotherapy and not related to HIV gene therapy in the 1970s.
Rutter's and Baltimore's pioneering work in biotechnology has left a lasting impact on the field. Rutter's cloning of insulin and other proteins at UCSF, followed by his co-founding of Chiron, has led to numerous medical advancements. Baltimore's discovery of reverse transcriptase and his involvement in various biotech companies have also significantly contributed to the industry's growth and development.
