Langenfeld School Cycling Event: Kopernikus Realschule Takes the Top Spot for a Third Consecutive Year

In the picturesque town of Langenfeld, cycling enthusiasts of all ages have been pedaling their way to success in the annual school and city cycling event. This year, the Kopernikus Realschule once again emerged victorious, securing the top spot in the overall Langenfeld city cycling team rankings.

The flat topography and short distances of Langenfeld make it an ideal location for cycling, encouraging both students and residents to take to their bikes. Principal Frank Theis encourages students to come to school by bike, regardless of the competition, fostering a culture of sustainability within the school.

The school cycling event is part of a larger district-wide city cycling event, with the ADFC team covering a total of 19,471 kilometers during this year's competition. The Kopernikus Realschule students, however, outdid themselves, covering a staggering 24,801 kilometers.

The success of Kopernikus Realschule is not solely due to the flat terrain. The dedicated teaching staff plays a significant role in motivating students to participate and cover as many routes as possible by bike instead of by car. The students collect kilometers daily, during weekends, tours, and spontaneous outings with friends.

Their efforts have not gone unnoticed. Goran Brozovic, head of the Langenfeld department of environment, traffic, and infrastructure, commends the practice of covering trips by bike instead of by car. He emphasises that active protection of the climate can be achieved by adopting this practice not just during the official event period, but all year round.

In fact, this reduction in travel by bike instead of car has resulted in a significant decrease in CO2 emissions. This year's school cycling event avoided 24 tons of CO2 emissions, contributing to a greener and cleaner Langenfeld.

Next year, the Kopernikus Realschule, along with other municipalities in the Mettmann district, will once again participate in the city cycling event. The action period for next year's event will be announced in good time, giving everyone plenty of opportunity to prepare and participate.

The citizens of Langenfeld cycled a total of 143,772 kilometers in the three-week period of the school and city cycling event, demonstrating a strong commitment to sustainability and a love for cycling. As the Kopernikus Realschule continues to dominate the school cycling event, it serves as an inspiration for other schools and communities to adopt similar practices and strive for a greener future.
