Australia Launches Inquiry into Asia Capability for Future Prosperity

The Australian Government has launched an inquiry into building Asia capability in Australia. Tim Watts, Chair of the Committee, underscored the significance of Asia capability for the nation's future prosperity and security. The investigation will assess the current state of Asian language learning and cultural studies, and explore opportunities to enhance Asian cultural literacy and diplomatic skills beyond language learning.

The inquiry, led by Tim Watts, will delve into the enablers and barriers to developing Asia capability. It will examine national and state responsibilities, societal attitudes, and institutional arrangements. The investigation will also evaluate expectations for whole-of-government coordination and collaboration in this area. Starting from early learning and extending through tertiary education and into the workforce, the inquiry will consider good practice models such as language learning, intercultural understanding, and regional engagement.

The Committee welcomes public input. Submissions are due by Friday, 7 November 2025, and more information on how to make a submission to a parliamentary committee is available online.

The inquiry aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of Asia capability in Australia. It seeks to identify ways to improve and promote Asian language learning, cultural understanding, and diplomatic skills. The findings will guide the government in formulating policies to enhance Australia's engagement with Asia, crucial for its future prosperity and security.
