VAN GOGGH, DUDE!
Vincent van Gogh, a legendary Dutch art bro, created his iconic Starry Night in 1889. While his work now sets records at millions at auction, he never quite hit the spotlight in his time. Today, we're honoring his unique style through a hands-on art activity kids will love! And did we mention it uses—ooof—coffee?
This Van Gogh-inspired project doesn't just add some excitement to your art room but also shines a light on color theory by allowing experimentation with shades of brown.
MAKE IT HAPPEN: COFFEE PAINTIN'
Here's whatcha need:
- Starry Night template (printable; see later)
- Instant coffee
- Warm water
- Paintbrushes
- 4 disposable containers
- Paper towels (for clean-up!)
INSTRUCTIONS
STEP 1.
Download and print the Starry Night template below or draw your own night sky, dude!
STEP 2.
Coffee time! In four containers, combine different amounts of instant coffee and water to form varying shades of brown.
Put one teaspoon of insta-coffee in each container. Then add varying amounts of H2O (1/4 teaspoon, 1/2 teaspoon, 1 full teaspoon, etc.) for a spectrum of medium to dark shades. The more water you use, the lighter the coffee color will be.
STEP 3.
Let your inner Picasso out! Use the coffee mixtures to paint your Starry Night on the template, experimenting with the different shades to bring out light and dark areas as Van Gogh did in the original painting! Concentrate on the swirls, stars, and the sky to create depth in your art using only shades of coffee.
VALUE CHECK
Value is one of the seven elements of art, describing color lightness or darkness. In Van Gogh's Starry Night, the range of values contributes to depth and contrast. This coffee painting activity gives kids a chance to learn about value using monochrome shades. Even little artists will get value, man!
