Annual talk at Park University in 2020 to discuss the role of diverse workforces in upholding democratic ideals through Hauptmann Lecture series.
The 28th annual Dr. Jerzy Hauptmann Distinguished Guest Lecture Series is set to take place on Thursday, Sept. 10, starting at noon. This year's featured speaker is Norma Riccucci, Ph.D., Board of Governors Distinguished Professor at Rutgers University - Newark (N.J.).
Riccucci has held various appointments at Rutgers since 2002, and has held her current role since 2015. She earned her doctorate degree in public administration from Syracuse University and her Bachelor of Public Administration degree from Florida International University. Riccucci also holds a Master of Public Administration degree from the University of Southern California.
In her presentation, Riccucci will focus on the importance of diversity in the workplace for the promotion of democratic ideals and values. She will examine how diversity in government workplaces produces social and economic equity, which are key democratic values for all segments of society. Riccucci will also address strategies that governments rely on to promote diversity.
These strategies typically include affirmative action policies, diversity training and education, inclusive recruitment practices, legal and regulatory frameworks, organizational culture change initiatives, data collection, and accountability. Riccucci emphasizes that these strategies are often implemented in combination and require sustained political and organizational commitment to be effective.
The Hauptmann Lecture brings outstanding scholars to the Kansas City area to address topics related to Jerzy Hauptmann's three areas of study: international politics, public administration, and democracy. The series was established in honor of Jerzy Hauptmann, who taught at Park University for more than 50 years. In 2001, Park's School for Public Affairs was renamed the Hauptmann School of Public Affairs in honor of Jerzy Hauptmann.
Jerzy Hauptmann launched Park University's first graduate degree program in 1982. The Hauptmann Lecture is presented in partnership with the American Society for Public Administration.
