Grace Bromage '23: A Journey through Student Journalism at The Spire

Grace Bromage '23, a senior at the College of the Holy Cross, has embarked on an impressive journey through student journalism at The Spire, the college's student newspaper.

Bromage began her tenure at The Spire in October 2019, serving as a Features Editor. Her role involved overseeing a team of writers, managing content in the features section, and contributing her own articles.

In the fall of her junior year, Bromage was promoted to the position of Editor-In-Chief, a role she held until the end of the Fall 2021 semester. As Editor-In-Chief, she helped set the vision and direction of the publication, managed the editorial calendar, and coordinated the work of the entire staff.

One of Bromage's most notable achievements during her time at The Spire was the creation of an article series called "Unsung Heroes," which she launched in the Fall of 2020. This series involved interviews with the groundskeepers, Kimball workers, and janitorial staff, offering a unique perspective on the unsung heroes who keep the college running.

Bromage's editorial work also extended to investigative reporting and feature writing. She interviewed Syrian artist Kevork Mourad in the fall of 2021, and co-wrote an interview with Russian journalist Dmitry Muratov in the vestry of St. Joseph’s Memorial Chapel.

Bromage's commitment to The Spire extended beyond her editorial roles. She also wrote articles on various topics, such as Mingwei Song's Chinese Science Fiction Lecture in October 2019.

In March 2023, The Spire and HerCampus, two student journalism groups at Holy Cross, celebrated their centennial year. The event provided students with an opportunity to hear from four alumni, including Bromage herself.

After graduation, Bromage continues to pursue her passion for journalism, currently working as a fellow at the Nativity School of Worcester, where she teaches art and English to fifth and sixth graders.

For those interested in learning more about Grace Bromage's specific positions, notable articles, or achievements at The Spire, the newspaper archives or staff lists from recent academic years are a good place to start. College newspapers often post contributor bios and past articles online, providing a more complete picture of a student's journalistic journey.
