Alexandria Kicks Off Week of Events and Initiatives, Including Old Town Cocktail Week and Duke Street Corridor Planning

Alexandria residents and visitors have a packed week ahead, with a range of events and initiatives kicking off. The city is ensuring accessibility with new services, while Old Town Cocktail Week starts today. Meanwhile, a significant planning process begins for the Duke Street Corridor.

The city has introduced accessibility options to cater to diverse needs. Residents can now access food, childcare, and language interpretation services in Spanish and Amharic. Old Town Cocktail Week is underway, with over 40 restaurants serving specialty cocktails until Oct. 6.

A new weekly farmers market has started today, operating from 3-7 p.m. across from the King Street-Old Town Metro station. For those interested in urban planning, a community meeting will be held on Thursday evening to discuss draft guiding principles for the Duke Street Land Use Plan. The meeting, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Bishop Ireton High School, will feature a presentation, Q&A, and facilitated discussions.

The 18-month planning process aims to update the comprehensive land use vision for the Duke Street corridor, which hasn't been updated since 1992. The corridor, facing mounting development pressure, includes approximately 600 small businesses and the roughly 2,100-unit Foxchase development. City Council consideration for adoption is anticipated for late 2026 or early 2027.

Alexandria residents are invited to participate in the planning process for the Duke Street Corridor, ensuring their voices are heard in shaping the city's future. Meanwhile, the city continues to provide accessibility options and hosts exciting events like Old Town Cocktail Week and the new weekly farmers market.
