AI Education Expansion in Africa: AltSchool Introduces 'AI for 10 Million Africans' Project to Enhance Artificial Intelligence Learning on the Continent
In a groundbreaking move, Nigerian edtech startup AltSchool has announced two new initiatives aimed at revolutionising AI education across Africa. The initiatives, named "Campus by AltSchool" and "AI for 10M Africans," are designed to provide Africans with access to AI education and position the continent as more than just a consumer of AI products.
The "AI for 10M Africans" initiative is part of a broader AI development effort across Africa, focusing on deploying AI technology to benefit millions of people, particularly through localised applications and partnerships fostering AI sovereignty and inclusion on the continent.
"Campus by AltSchool" is a new offering for hybrid learning programs, designed to enhance course completion rates and provide an immersive learning experience. The program will cater to learners of all levels, starting with foundational courses and followed by advanced and technical courses on topics like machine learning, data science, and AI engineering. Physical classes for "Campus by AltSchool" will begin at two locations in Lagos, with plans to expand to other cities, including Kigali.
To make the programs accessible to individuals who may not have the financial means, AltSchool is forging scholarship partnerships with organisations like Binance and Bybit.
Foluso Folorunso, Senior Product Designer at AltSchool, emphasised the need for Africans to recognise how to leverage AI for transformation in various industries. "We believe that AI has the potential to revolutionise many sectors in Africa, from agriculture to healthcare, and it's crucial that Africans are equipped with the skills to harness this power," said Folorunso.
While "Campus by AltSchool" is not part of the "AI for 10M Africans" educational program, it aligns with the initiative's aim to ensure Africans are not left behind in the AI revolution. Adewale Yusuf, CEO of AltSchool Africa, stated, "Our goal is to empower Africans with the knowledge and skills needed to thrive in the AI-driven future. With these initiatives, we are taking a significant step towards achieving that goal."
The "AI for 10M Africans" initiative is not available in several languages, including Swahili, French, Portuguese, Arabic, and Hausa, to encourage widespread adoption across the continent. However, courses will be available in several languages, including Swahili, French, Portuguese, Arabic, and Hausa, to make learning accessible to as many people as possible.
The courses will be scheduled to roll out in Q2 2025, joining other AI development efforts across Africa. For instance, Google's $37 million AI package, announced in July 2025, includes a $7 million allocation to expand AI education in Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, and Ghana. Google's initiatives highlight adapting AI technologies to African languages and cultural contexts, ensuring solutions are inclusive and accessible across various locations and language groups.
AfricAI, a joint venture formed by four tech firms, focuses on localising and commercialising AI tailored to African contexts, initially targeting Nigeria. Its mission emphasises AI developed within Africa, for African markets, focusing on healthcare, digital identity, public administration, agriculture, and urban planning.
Overall, these initiatives reflect a multi-partner, multi-country ecosystem approach aimed at accelerating AI adoption, education, sovereignty, and contextualised technology deployment across key sectors like agriculture, health, and education, tailored specifically to African languages and local needs.
