Tohru Nakamura, the ecstatic Munich-based culinary maestro, finds himself lost for words as he grins ear to ear, looking like a kid on Christmas day. It's no surprise that thisput him in a bit of a daze - he's just been inducted into the elite ranks of three-star chefs, making only twelve individuals in Germany to claim this prestigious accolade.

Nakamura sheds his jacket to a storm of applause

This long-awaited culinary triumph takes place at the historic "Gesellschaftshaus Palmengarten" in Frankfurt am Main. During a star-studded gala, the highly-anticipated ratings of the renowned food guide, the Michelin Guide, were revealed for Germany.

When the guide's international director, Gwendal Poullennec, announced the name Tohru Nakamura and his restaurant "Tohru in der Schreiberei", the audience went wild with applause. Wading through the standing ovation, the now-former two-star chef from Munich walked towards the stage, discarded his jacket, and slipped into the much-coveted white chef's jacket bedecked with three red stars.

Behind the radiant 41-year-old Nakamura, enthusing him on stage, were the "Germany's three-star family" as Director Poullennec called them. All the current three-star chefs went ahead and confirmed their highest rating this year. With two new colleagues from Hamburg and Munich joining ranks, Germany currently boasts a grand total of twelve three-star chefs.

Munich reigns supreme: Two gourmet cathedrals

Munich belongs to the big leagues: Jan Hartwig, a culinary artist who's been delivering three-star excellence for years, is now the owner of Jan - making Munich home to two (modern) gourmet temples. Along with Essenz in Grassau, there are now three of these exceptional top restaurants in Bavaria. No other federal state has more!

On stage, Jan Hartwig and Tohru Nakamura embraced, another moment that drew massive cheers at the star ceremony, as Nakamura also invited his Munich teammates to share the stage. After all, success is a team endeavor: "We're all happy."

Munich is star-struck: Other Michelin-starred restaurants in the city

Retaining their two-star rankings in Munich are Alois in Feinkosthaus Dallmayr, Atelier in the Bayerischer Hof hotel, the Restaurant Komu, and the legendary Tantris.

Having formerly held two stars, Nakamura's restaurant got a promotion. Thus, Munich now boasts four instead of the previous six top restaurants. Among the city's now nine (previously eleven) Michelin-starred restaurants, there's also a big surprise - the Restaurant 1804 Hirschau is now officially a starred restaurant.
