A Discussion with Nutrition and Wellness Consultant Emily Chapman

Meet Emily Chapman, the vibrant marketing maven turned Integrative Nutrition Health Coach! Janet had the pleasure of chatting with this fabulous lady to dig a bit deeper into her inspiring life story and insights on health and wellness.

Emily, a Texas native, grew up with an active mother who encouraged her to engage in physical activities. Despite striving to keep a lean physique, Emily grappled with weight management issues, as those times lacked the nutritional understanding that exists today.

Later in her life, Emily moved to New York City and focused on her marketing career. Her late entry into parenthood brought about a moment of clarity— she yearned to live a long, healthy life to witness her children's milestones and moments of joy.

Emily's curiosity about food and wellness led her to delve into physiology, ultimately setting her on a path to transform her life. A series of significant life changes, including losing her job and her divorce from her long-term partner, served as the catalyst that spurred Emily to attend the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. In just a year, she graduated and plunged headlong into her own practice.

As an Integrative Nutrition Health Coach, Emily focuses on 12-week programs and hourly sessions tailored to clients' health needs. She begins by examining family history to identify potential health risks and emphasizes the importance of gut health, brain health, and longevity. Her methods empower clients to understand and embrace food, exercise, stress, weight, and overall well-being.

Yoga and meditative breath are core components of Emily's self-care rituals, offering a peaceful and flexible means to relax and recharge. Emily also finds solace in gardening, viewing it as a form of meditation. Incorporating movement, fresh air, and the soothing rhythm of tending to plants, gardening serves as a perfect example of "dirty wellness."

Healthy living isn't about rigid rules, Emily stresses. Instead, she advocates for the 80/20 rule, which encourages eating nutritious foods 80% of the time while indulging in enjoyable treats 20% of the time. Just as you care for a cherished vehicle, Emily encourages treating your body with respect and nourishment by fueling it with wholesome, nutrient-rich foods.

Good nutrition plays a pivotal role in promoting mental, physical, and sleep health. Emily emphasizes the importance of gut health, citing the high concentration of neurons in the gut and the impact gut health has on mental health and quality of sleep. Probiotics help maintain gut health and reduce inflammation and bloating, while prebiotics support gut flora. Foods rich in probiotics include Greek yogurt, sauerkraut, and kombucha.

Emily is planning numerous wellness retreats for women in the coming year, complete with a grief counselor, life coach, and, of course, Emily herself. She is a proud member of the Garden Club of America and eager to embark on garden visits in New Orleans with the club. As she continues to assist clients on their health journeys, Emily showcases that it's never too late to pursue your dreams, even if that dream comes your way later in life.
